2017 marked seventy years since the founding of the Dorset Rural Music School and a full programme of events was planned in celebration of this major landmark including concerts by past and current students and staff as well as our distinguished patrons, further Dorset Island Disc sessions, a quiz to test your knowledge of both Dorset and music, and of course a party.

Workshop on Glees and Catches - Now We Are Met
Partsongs from the 18th and 19th centuries full of wit and political satire. This was led by Chris Price, an old friend of DRMS and something of a world expert on this intriguing area of English music.
Primarily for singers, players would be welcome too to help explore this technically not-too-demanding repertoire.

John Young - High Sheriff of Dorset - in conversation

We have by no means exhausted all the local musicians  willing to be cast away in our Desert Island Discs series, but we are looking beyond the music desk or the organ loft to include people from other walks of life who have an interesting tale to tell and a catholic taste in music.
John Young certainly fits both these categories; his life has ranged from service in Northern Ireland in the teeth of the 'troubles' to work in Dorset, thirty years as a magistrate and now filling the role of High Sheriff. His musical tastes are equally wide-ranging from Peter Grimes to Danny Kaye!

  • Friday 6 October 2017

We are inviting SINGERS to help us celebrate this auspicious milestone by joining us in a ‘scratch’ performance of ...
